<image:caption>In December 2014, the Washington Department of Children and Family Services removed Kaine Edward Lusk from his biological parents. Years of physical abuse and neglect had left Kaine with severe post-traumatic stress disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder which manifested in violent tantrums and an array of developmental issues. Medication and therapy adjustments for foster children need to be approved by a judge, a legal speed bump that often kept Kaine stuck on prescriptions that exacerbated some of his issues. After nearly five years spent cycling through foster homes, Kaine landed on the stoop of long-time foster parents Roddy and Crystal Bauer. Two years later, the Bauers officially adopted Kaine, who changed his name to Kaine Jackson Bauer in honor of his love for the late musician Michael Jackson.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Emmilee Risling, 33, vanished along a lonely stretch of pavement known as End of Road, becoming the sixth Indigenous woman to disappear in just 18 months from the remote Northern California region known as the Lost Coast. Five months after she went missing, tribal police and the county sheriff’s department had largely halted their search for the mother of two, law student and accomplished traditional dancer. This project follows the community, her family, and Yurok tribal officials who continue to look for Emmilee. It explores their efforts to cut through jurisdictional red tape, longstanding distrust of law enforcement, and generations of trauma that place Indigenous women at far greater risk of violent crime—and that also constrain the search for them. This Picture: A dog walks along the End of the Road, an isolated corner of the neighboring Hoopa Valley Reservation where police received and investigated reports of Emmilee staying before her disappearance in October on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022, in Wautec Village, California.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Living with Adam</image:title>
<image:caption>Adam Goza, 33, was drunk when he jumped off a dock and fell thirty feet into shallow water, breaking his neck. Told he would be a quadriplegic for the rest of his life, Adam relies on his mother Chery Giddens, 59. After five years of recovery Adam and his mother refuse to accept that his condition is permanent and continue his recovery in hopes of a day when Adam can return to a life of independence. Adams days are spent planning hunting trips and exotic travels for a future where he’s regained the use of his legs. Chery’s are spent next to her son, bathing and feeding him. Together they wait for the day when their prayers will come true.</image:caption>

Medication and therapy adjustments for foster children need to be approaved by a judge, a legal speed bump that often kept Kaine stuck on prescriptions that exacerbated some of his issues.
